IT CAME FROM PINEHURST! 4/1
Wow! Already on my second newsletter.
Here’s an update for everyone waiting to see the first chapter of BLOOD TREE on zestworld.com, the new comic creator site that I’m happy to be a part of.
April 7th, next Thursday, you’ll be able to go directly to https://bit.ly/zw-pjt and dive into the brand new pages by me, Maxim Šimić, John Kalisz, and Rob Leigh. Maxim just turned in the art for the third issue of BLOOD TREE and I’m really excited for you all to check it out.
Also on the turntable at the moment, is the next issue script for SNIPE AND SLUG. The kickass series I’m working on with the amazing Brad Walker, Brad Anderson, Robe Leigh, and Brian Cunningham. I have to say, these first two issues are some of the best comic art I’ve ever seen, and I’m saying that from behind an objective lens as I can get. I’ve managed to line up an incredible roster of talent for some variant covers, and they’re simply beautiful.
Listening to some Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks today while I work:
Outland, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Papillon, Patton, Capricorn One (which I love and used on my Super 8 films growing up), and The Sand Pebbles (my favorite McQueen film). What a composer! What an eclectic mix of genres. Goldsmith could do anything.

A bunch fun stuff happened in between the last newsletter. Got an invite from my bud, Geoff Johns, to visit Atlanta and check out the set of Stargirl before they wrapped up their third season. Walked around the sound stages, and even grabbed some cool shots of this tiny little robot some of you DC fans may recognize.
Best part of Atlanta trip was chilling out with Luke Wilson, Joel McHale, and several other über-talented actors over a great steak dinner and hearing funny stories about The Royal Tenenbaums and Community the night before I left. If you haven’t checked out Stargirl, you should. Lotta fun and a lotta heart.
Also, a bit of progress on a tremendously incredible project that I can hopefully share some news with ya soon. Fingers crossed.
Atmospherically speaking, been feeding the soul with several ingredients:

Just got The Godfather Trilogy in 4k. I believe over the years Paramount Pictures has received a year’s college tuition on the many different formats for the first 2 films (not so much on the third rim, but that’s a whole other newsletter). Sneaking in to see it on it’s original release and getting kicked out just when Brando’s oranges hit the street (that theater manager was the bane of my existence during my formative years), Super 8 Selected Scenes, Betamax (Google Ancient Media tools for those), VHS, VHS Godfather Saga (where the first two films were edited chronologically), Laserdisc, followed by letterboxed Laserdisc, DVD’s, followed by remastered DVD’s, re-release of the film a few years back in the theater, Blu-Ray, and then…finally…the 4k version I watched this past weekend. On a Sony 70 inch screen, all I have to say is it’s a beauty and immersive. My second favorite film of all time. I never tire of watching it and I love zeroing in on different parts of the image with each viewing to focus on other actors react and to savor set design. I’ll save my top five film reveals for another newsletter.
On the written word front: Just finished Late City by Robert Olen Butler. Wonderful novel. Great prose. God makes an old man look back on his life. Also, Bambi versus Godzilla by David Mamet, a book about the movie business from Mamet’s distinct point of view.

I always have two books on the bedside table at the same time. One Non-Fiction, the other Fiction. I like the balance, and somehow, someway, the right book always gets picked up before the Sandman comes.
Well, enough of my yapping. One more week and you’ll be reading BLOOD TREE. Then we’ll talk.
