Lady Killer's Home Journal: Josie is Calling
Joëlle Jones

Editor's Note

Dear reader,

After months of planning, Josie is finally ready to sweep in and brighten your home:

The prologue to an all-new Lady Killer adventure, Lady Killer Ltd., is scheduled to land in all levels of subscriber mailbox next week.

During the editors' recent visit to her studio, Joëlle handed us coupe glasses filled with something dark and crimson (more on this below) and let us peek at her drawing desk. She's tight-lipped about the upcoming story, but it looks like we might be paying a visit to some sort of bucolic farm:

Ms. Jones also appeared to have laid into various magazines and swatches with a pair of shears in a violent act of "collage," though she refused to explain her actions and simply refilled our glasses:

And now, the return of a column loved and feared by Lady Killer readers:

Ask Josie Anything!

Dear Josie:

I need a recommendation for a cocktail to celebrate a truly bloody revenge. I don't want to drown my sorrows or wash away the revenge — on the contrary, I want to remember and savor it with every sip! Please help.

— Satisfied Only by Bloody Revenge

It didn't escape our notice that your Sobriquet Rouge boils down to the acronym SOBR, and that simply won't do! A bold libation is to vengeance as a chenin blanc is to whitefish: essential pairing.

We reached out to longtime reader/mixologist Kirk Lund with your question, and he came back with the following cocktail recipe, which he described as "a modified version of the Teresa — a cocktail created by Rafael Ballesteros and quoted in The Joy of Mixology by Gary Regan." We're calling Kirk's variation:

The Cold & Bitter Revenge

In a shaker tin, add:

  • 2 oz. Campari
  • 1 oz. Giffard Cassis Noir De Bourgogne
  • 1 oz. fresh-squeezed lime juice

Add ice and shake for 5-10 seconds.Strain into a coupe or cocktail glass you've been chilling in the freezer this whole time.

Optionally garnish with 2 blackcurrants, elderberries or blueberries on a very sharp pick.

The acid sting of this cocktail demands measured contemplation. Also: Avoid spilling it on the carpet. It creates a stain as unsightly as evidence.
